The community of Chamonix, France is mourning the death of Guillaume Pierrel, a beloved mountain guide and ski mountaineer who passed away on June 24, 2026, after being caught in an avalanche while attempting K6 in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. He was 42.
Born in France’s Vosges region in 1983, Pierrel dedicated his life to the mountains. A certified mountain guide based in Chamonix, he built an international reputation through his achievements in alpine climbing, steep skiing, and ski mountaineering. His adventures took him across the Alps, Andes, and Karakoram, where he became known for lightweight, technical ascents and ambitious ski descents on some of the world’s most challenging peaks.
Among his most celebrated accomplishments was the successful ascent and ski descent of Gasherbrum II in 2021, completed in alpine style with a French team. Pakistan remained one of his favorite destinations, and he returned repeatedly in pursuit of new routes and unexplored objectives. Beyond mountaineering, he was also an accomplished endurance athlete who competed in ultra-distance races and high-altitude skyrunning events.
Pierrel lost his life during an expedition on K6 in the Hushe Valley when an avalanche struck his climbing team at approximately 5,000 meters. Fellow climbers Boris Jule and Christina Maria survived the incident. Remembered for his humility, professionalism, and deep respect for the mountains, Guillaume Pierrel leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire climbers and skiers around the world. His passion for exploration and adventure will not be forgotten.
